There is a lot of power play in the institutionalized sciences, but there is a perfectly objective rule to keep that in check: if you are wrong, the bridge will collapse and the plane will not fly (OK, quantum physics and climate modeling are exceptions, but hopefully will not be exceptions for long). Sooner or later truth will prevail, or rather the falsehoods will be disclosed.
